Approaches to Combat the Polysulfide Shuttle Phenomenon in Li–S Battery Technology

Lithium–sulfur battery (LSB) technology has tremendous prospects to substitute lithium-ion (LIB) due its high energy density. However, the escaping of polysulfide intermediates (produced during redox reaction process) from cathode structure is primary reason for rapid capacity fading. Suppressing shuttle (PSS) a viable solution this move closer commercialization and supersede established LIB technology. In review, we have analyzed challenges faced by LSBs outlined current methods materials used address these problems. We conclude that in order further pioneer LSBs, it necessary essential features sulfur cathode: superior electrical conductivity ensure faster kinetics discharge capacity, pore volume host maximize loading/utilization, polar PSS-resistive anchor suppress migration polysulfides, which can be developed with use nanofabrication combinations PSS-suppressive qualities each component. With factors addressed, our world will able forge ahead development on larger scale—for efficiency systems advancement potential benefits outweigh costs performance decay.
